Varsity Takes 2nd At Libertyville Invite

Wednesday, September 21 2016 - Libertyville Cross Country Invite

In the varsity race at the Libertyville Invite, Highland Park took the race to Prospect High School as the pack got out well and was in front of the top five runners from Prospect.  As the race got to the mile, juniors Alec Glazier, Nate Amster, and Fitz Laurie were with the leaders and put the pressure on the Prospect pack to try and catch them.  By the two mile, the top 3 Prospect runners were moving ahead of Glazier.  He fought tough and had a great race to take 7th place overall.   The rest of the top 5 HP pack that was racing finished with a gap of 28.6 seconds.   Senior Charlie Skurie moved up well throughout the race to take 10th as Amster finished two places behind him in 12th.  After struggling mid race, Laurie bounced back at the end and finished in 17th.  The top 5 was rounded out with senior Matthew Casey taking 22nd.   Seniors Juan Estela and Hayden Schott fought hard to take 37th and 49th.   Despite a great early effort by the GIANTS, the team ended up a distant 2nd place to a very good Prospect team. The varsity knows they must ALL run together as a tighter pack if they are going to beat teams like Prospect.

The frosh-soph and open races did not have many HP runners competing, which is something that needs to improve as a program.  The team needs guys that are well trained, tough, and reliable if they want to stay successful.  The frosh-soph were led by sophomores Richard Heller  (33rd, in his first race of the season since injuring his back) and Jack Schulman (39th, as he continues to improve with consistent training).  The top freshmen finisher was Nolan Espinoza in 119th.  The top finisher for HP in the open race was junior Sebastian Arias as he worked his way up throughout the race to take 14th.

If the team is going to reach their goals they made at the beginning of the season, they are going to have to put in the work and BELIEVE in themselves, the process, and each other!
