HP Frosh-Soph Win Deerfield Duel!

Sunday, March 16 2014 - Deerfield Duel

On the Frosh-Soph level at the 2014 Deerfield Duel Meet, the Highland Park squad put together a strong well rounded team performance winning 10 of the 15 events that were contested. The Giants finished with 74 points to win the meet as Deerfield scored 49 points. The future looks very bright for Highland Park Track & Field. If all of these young athletes continue to make a commitment to track & field excellence, then the team and individual success will continue to follow.

Field Events:

Shot-Put: Sophomore Sheridan Clayborn won the event by nearly six feet with a throw of 36'00”. Freshmen Michael Steczek finished in 3rd (30' 6”).

High Jump: Despite the first four jumpers clearing the same height (5' 4”), due to the number of misses, Sophomores Kiree Cooper and Jessie Redd took 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Long Jump: Freshmen Deven Robinson finished in 2nd place, just two inches out of first with a jump of 15' 11”.

Triple Jump: Freshmen Nick Kirsh won the event with a leap of 32' 9.5” with teammate Redd taking 3rd in 31' 2”.

Pole Vault: We got big points from this event as freshmen Jared Levine took 1st (8' 6") while freshmen Gabe Strauss took 2nd (8' 0").

Track Events:

4X800 Meter Relay: The HP team, made up of all freshmen, started off well as Jonathan Rosenfeld ran a 2:19.5 split to give the team a strong lead. As the relay progressed the Giants were not able to maintain the lead and Deerfield was able to pull away for a solid victory.

50 Meter High Hurdles: Freshmen Zev Motew continued to show dominance in the hurdles at the frosh-soph level as he ran 7.8 to win the event. This is the second time this week he has broken the HP freshmen record for this event. Kirsh had a strong race to take 3rd (8.9).

50 Meter Dash: Cooper was able to pick up another 2nd place as he ran a 6.4.

800 Meter Run: After losing the 4X800 earlier, the distance guys knew they needed to come up big in this event. The Giants did just that as freshmen Matthew Casey (2:22.8) and sophomore Daniel Arias (2:23.4) both had strong finishes to pull away from the Deerfield runners and go 1-2.

4X160 Meter Relay: Despite a strong effort by the Highland Park squad, Deerfield was able to hold them off for the victory in this event.

400 Meter Dash: Sophomore Max Zavell ran away from the competition in this event with an over 4 second victory running :59.8. Freshmen Greg Schrosh picked up 3rd place with a time of 1:05.0.

50 Meter Low Hurdles: Motew and Kirsh once again took 1st and 3rd running 7.1 and 8.2. For Motew, that is another HP freshmen record!

1600 Meter Run: Our 1600 meter runners did not what to be outdone by the 800 runners, so they ran a smart tough race to also finish 1-2! Rosenfeld won in 5:07.1 and Josh Drummond got 2nd in 5:09.3.

200 Meter Dash: Cooper finished out a great meet by winning this event in a :25.3.

4X400 Meter Relay: The team of Motew, Drummond, Rosenfeld, and Zavell ran away with the relay (4:08.5) to close out the meet with an exclamation point!
