Davidson Sets Track Record In Team's First Outdoor Meet Of The Season

Saturday, April 16 2016 - Highland Park vs. Waukegan, Evanston, and Loyola

After the first outdoor meet was cancelled, the Giants was excited to finally compete outdoors as they hosted the home quad meet against Evanston, Waukegan, and Loyola.

Senior Brett Davidson raced in his first 3200 Meter Run of the season.   His goal was to run sub 9:30 and go for the Wolters Field track record of 9:28.4 (set by Tommy King of New Trier in 2011).   Davidson ran his race to perfection as he pulled away from the field going through the 1600 in 4:38.  He finished in 9:26.3 to set a new track record winning by over 23 seconds.  HP had four other racers in the 3200 and they each ran their best times (junior Jonathan Rosenfeld 10:03.4, senior Joe Pinsky 10:24.5, junior Hayden Schott 11:05.5, freshmen Andrew Biondi 12:44.5).

Sophomore Zach Auerbach won the frosh-soph Discus with a big personal best of 121’9”.  He took 2nd in the Shot Put with another personal best of 42’9”.  Junior Joey Sereda won the varsity Discus with a 135’0”.   The throwers continue to be one of the main strengths of the team this season.

The 1600 Meter Run had many strong performances for HP.  Davidson won on varsity in 4:37.7 after a conservative start to the race.   Rosenfeld was 4th in 4:44.0 followed by PRs from sophomores Nate Amster (4:45.4) and Alec Glazier (4:48.3).   Also running strong races were junior Ben Bloom (4:51.3) and senior Alejandro Gutierrez (4:54.7).    The frosh-soph 1600 had sophomore Alex Frank running his best race of the season to take 2nd in 5:03.4.  The other Giants in this race also ran personal bests (freshmen Chris Cizek 5:23.1, Jack Schulman 5:25.7, and sophomore Sebastian Arias with a huge improvement running 5:56.0 (his previous best was 6:54).

Junior Bobby McCraren was consistent once again in the Pole Vault as he tied his best with a clearance of 11’0” to take 2nd place on varsity.  Freshmen Ben Kirsch won the frosh-soph event clearing 9’6” and freshmen Jonathan Tinc cleared a new personal best of 8’6” to take 2nd.

Sophomore Luke Crawford continues to excel as a first year member of the track & field team that also does football in the fall.   He won the frosh-soph Triple Jump (32’4”) and took second in both the Long Jump (16’5.5”) and 100 Meter Dash (12.1).   Senior DJ Penick, another multi-sport star (football and wrestling), is starting to show his speed on the track as he took 2nd in the varsity 100 Meter Dash in 11.6.  He also took 3rd in both the Triple Jump (37’7.5”) and Long Jump (18’5”).

Junior Ben Davis had strong performances in the sprints take 4th in the 100 Meter Dash (11.8) and 2nd in the 200 Meter Dash (24.4).

The 400 Meter Dash is an area in which the team is looking for more help and at this meet we started to get that.  Juniors Steven Weathers, Gabe Newman, and Ari Weisenthal took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in the event (56.6, 57.6, and 58.6).

Junior Zev Motew had another strong meet for the team.  He stepped in to anchor the 4X100 Meter Relay, took 2nd place in both hurdle races (15.5 and 42.2), and ended the night with a tremendous come from behind effort to help the varsity win the 4X400 Meter Relay as he ran a 54.4 split.

A good start to the outdoor season, but still significant work and improvement is needed for the team to be successful in the final weeks of the season.
