Warren Invite

Monday, April 25 2016 - Warren Invitational

Highland Park competed in its first invite of the 2016 outdoor season as they travelled to Gurnee for the Warren Invite.  The conditions were perfect and the team had many notable performances.

Sprints:

Senior Mark Gilling took 6th in the 100 Meter Dash (11.5) and 4th in the 200 Meter Dash (23.3).  Junior Ben Davis also ran well in the 200 with a 6th place finish in 23.9.

Junior Steven Weathers had his strongest race of the season as he took 5th in the 400 Meter Dash (55.21).

On the frosh-soph level sophomore Luke Crawford finished 3rd in the 100 Meter Dash (12.01) and 4th in the 200 Meter Dash (25.2).   Sophomore Andrew Derdena took 6th in the 200 running a 25.9.

Distance:

Junior Ben Bloom had a strong race in the 800 Meter Run with a 2:07.2 to finish in 6th place.

Junior Jonathan Rosenfeld finished 3rd in the 1600 Meter Run with a fast finish to run his best time of 4:38.8.  Freshmen Jose Reyes finished just behind him in 4:41.1 to take 4th place.

Sophomores Alec Glazier and Nate Amster took 5th and 7th in the 3200 Meter Run.   Glazier tied his best time in 10:08.2 and Amster ran his best time with a 10:14.2.

For frosh-soph, Freshmen Jack Casey took 4th place in the 800 Meter Run with a 2:23.6.

Hurdles:

Junior Zev Motew took 2nd place in both hurdle races running 15.4 in the 110 Meter High Hurdles and 41.8 in the 300 Meter Intermediate Hurdles.

Field Events:

On Varsity, Tucker Thompson won the Shot Put (44’6”) and took 2nd in the Discus (128’1.5”).  Junior Joey Sereda was 5th in Discus with a toss of 119’0.5”.

Junior Bobby McCraren finished in 5th place in the Pole Vault with an 11’0” clearance.

The frosh-soph did very well in the field events.  This included four 1st place finishes.  Sophomore Zach Auerbach won both the Shot Put (39’8”) and the Discus (124’8”).   Jack Casey won the High Jump (5’4”) and freshmen Ben Kirsch won the Pole Vault (9’6”).

The Giants also got a 3rd place from freshmen Jacob French in the Pole Vault (9’0”) while Crawford finished 2nd in the Long Jump (17’3”) and 3rd in the Triple Jump (32’1.5”).

Relays:

The team needs to improve on their depth in both sprints and distance to have stronger performances in the relays.   The highest relay finish for HP was in the frosh-soph 4X800 Meter Relay.   They ran a gutsy race to take 2nd place.   Freshmen Chris Cizek had a strong lead-off leg to put them in good position going into the first exchange.  Sophomore Sebastian Arias and freshmen Ben Keller ran their best times to keep the team close to 3rd place.   The anchor was Jack Casey and he got the baton in 3rd but within striking distance.  He ran a great anchor leg to catch and pass another team to take 2nd place with a 2:18.9 split!

A great deal of work still needs to be done, but the team has many bright spots that will continue to lead us through the rest of the season.
