HP Takes 2nd at CSL North Frosh Invite

The freshmen got to compete in the CSL North Freshmen Invite. This allows the freshmen an opportunity to just compete against their own grade level in a full invite. Grayslake Central hosted the always competitive Lake County Invite. Highland Park came into the meet knowing they had the opportunity to score significant points and have numerous medal winners. 

 

Field Event Highlights:

 

The HP freshmen throwers had a very successful meet. Max Sukenik won both the shot put and discus! He threw a personal best 104’2.5” in the discus and threw 33’1.25” in the shot put. Constatine Soutsos was 2nd in the discus also with a personal best. He threw 91’6.75”. In the shot put he was 3rd with a toss of 26’3.75”. Ismael Vazquez had a big personal best in the open shot put of 32’9.25”. That would have placed 2nd in the main shot put event. Gabe Leon threw 21’4.25” in the shot put.

 

In the pole vault, Fin Nunez was 3rd at 6’6” and Will Redmond got 4th clearing 6’0”. 

 

William Sheahen took 3rd place in the triple jump. He jumped a personal best 29’0.5”.

 

In the long jump, Lucas Hoobler took 5th place with a mark of 13’7.75”. Matthew Nielsen was 6th getting near his personal best at 12’10”. Will Redmond jumped a personal best 12’3” to go past 12 feet for the first time. Sheahen jumped 12’2”. 

 

Track Event Highlights:

 

The 4X800 meter relay team for Highland Park battled tough and ended up taking 3rd place, just 6 seconds out of first place. Logan Liu led off with a personal best 2:18.5. Carter Ramirez ran 2:33.5. David Miller split a 2:35.2 and Daniel Doyle also ran a personal best 2:18.2. The team’s final time was 9:45.75.

 

The 4X100 meter relay team for the Giants consisted of two sprinters and two throwers! They ended up running a freshmen season best time of :53.97 for 4th place. The team consisted of Hayden Tortora, Ethan Glovsky, Constantine Soutsos, and Gabe Leon. 

 

In the 3200 meter run, Josh Brown and Henry Gamson raced to a strong 2-3 finish for the Giants. They ran 11:03.53 and 11:03.94. 

 

HP had four runners racing the 100 meter dash. Nielsen led the way for the Giants with a personal best 14.08. Hoobler was next with a 14:43 to just miss his best time. Will Redmond ran a personal best 14:62 and Sheahen also raced to his fastest time in 14.65.

 

The 800 meter run was an exciting race for the Giants. Truman Evans went out fast and into the lead. Daniel Doyle also got out well and was not far behind despite having run the 4X800 already. Evans ended up winning in 2:20.75 and Doyle held on for 2nd in 2:24.37. 

 

Like the 4X100, the 4X200 meter relay also ran a season best freshman time. The quartet of Tortora, Nielsen, Glovsky, and Sheahen ran 1:56.26 and took 4th place. 

 

Fin Nunez ran a strong 400 meter dash race to finish in 3rd place with a time of 1:01.70.

 

Hayden Tortora raced the 300 intermediate hurdles for the first time and took 4th place. He ran :55.57 for the event.

 

In the 1600 meter run, Logan Liu finished in 4th place and Josh Brown was 5th. They ran 5:08.10 and 5:14.97. In the open 1600, HP had 4 runners: Henry Gamson (5:24.36), Lowell Redmond (5:41.02), David Miller (6:01.89) and Yousef Ansari (6:46.53). 

 

Tortora raced the 200 meter dash for HP and took 5th place with a time of :28.18.

 

The 4X400 meter relay team took 4th place in 4:06.19. The team consisted of Evans (:57.5 for a personal best split), Nunez (1:03.8), Brown (1:01.9), and Liu (1:02.7). 

 

The Giants finished in 2nd place behind a very good Deerfield freshmen team. There are many things to be excited for as the HP freshmen had numerous highlights. If they stick with it, they will be a successful team in future years. 

 

The nominations for Giant of the Meet included:

Daniel Doyle - anchored 3rd place 4X800 w/2:18.2 PR, came back with gutsy race to take 2nd in 800 (2:24.37)

 

Hayden Tortora - 4 events, led off the 4th place 4X100 and 4X200, 4th in the 300IH, and 5th in the 200

 

Truman Evans - 1st in the 800 (2:20.75), split a :57.5 PR in 4X400 to give team the lead

 

Matthew Nielsen - PR in 100 from 14.5 to 14.08, near PR in LJ at 12’10”

 

Max Sukenik - 1st in SP and Discus, PR in discus of 104’2.25”
