CSL Invite Summary

Wednesday, October 22 2014 - CSL Invite

The CSL Championship meet had mixed results. Three of the four races went well for the Giants.

Freshmen:

The frosh team raced well. They were led by Alex Frank. Frank tried to go with the lead pack for as long as he could. He battled tough and ended up with a solid 4th place finish in the CSL North. Alec Glazier was the next finisher for the team. He was able to take 7th in the CSL North. Danny Friedman and Sam Falberg were once again consistent in their roll on the team as they both placed in the top 14 of the North Division (10th and 13th). The scoring was wrapped up with Ben Sipowicz. He was running with an injured ankle but stepped up for his teammates to hobble his way to a 22nd place finish in the CSL North. The frosh team ended up in 3rd place as they lost on the 6th man tiebreaker with GBN. The freshmen have shown this season that they have a chance to do great things in their careers at HP. If they are willing to make the commitment and be ALL IN, they have an opportunity to be one of the best teams ever at HP.

Varsity:

This race was a major disappointment for the Giants. The team really fell apart in the final mile along with some of them being out of position early in the race. It was not what we were expecting and was tough to watch. The team will bounce back from this poor performance at Regionals. They are focused and determined to show what they really can do when they execute their race plan and race with determination.

Sophomores:

The sophomores knew that they had a chance to win the North Division and were focused to do so from the start. They worked off each other throughout their race and were able to execute their race plan. Matt Casey has been having a wonderful season and it continued as he took 2nd in the North Division. Next in was Charlie Skurie who has made a huge improvement in his racing this season. His hard work got him a 4th place finish in the North. Josh Drummond and Harrison Freeman were the next two in as they took 8th and 9th. Juan Estela took 11th despite battling injuries most of the season. Next in was David Heller who just missed top 14 as he was 15th. The Giants scored 34 points to win the CSL North ahead of GBN's 57 points. Like the freshmen, this is a group of young men that if they are willing to put in the work each year, they have the potential for greatness.

JV:

The JV also ran a very determined race as they wanted to end the meet on a high note after the disappointing varsity race earlier. They got out aggressively and were able to win the CSL North with just 27 points! The team was led by senior Dylan Kahn who wanted to make his last CSL Meet a strong performance. He did that as he took 2nd place. Junior Joe Pinsky was battled to finish in 4th and senior Kevin Merkel ran solid to take 5th. This put 3 in the top 5 of the North Division. Next in was junior Alejandro Gutierrez. He has been a pleasant surprise for the team as he moved here over the summer and has worked very hard and made tremendous improvement from when he started. He took 7th place in the JV race. Another of the many runners on this team that has made big improvement due to hard work has been senior Jay Levin. He took 9th place to give HP 5 runners in the top 10! Senior Zack Goldberg, who has battled through injuries and recently was having a foot issue, had a strong finish to out-kick a few runners to take the final award winning spot and finish in 14th place. This was a real nice way for Goldberg to end his high school cross country career.
