2010 HPHS Charity Drive - 24 Hour Run

Wednesday, January 6 2010 - 24 Hour Run

Since 1994, Highland Park High school has devoted the entire month of February to raising money for a charity nomisteeplewebd and voted upon by the students. This year, the students of Highland Park High School, have chosen CCFA (Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America-Illinois Chapter). Crohn’s and Colitis is characterized as an inflammatory bowel disease that affects every aspect of digestion.  The many affects of this terrible disease are; social stigma, major weight loss, pain, depression, and in some cases, parts of the bowel need to be removed.  At Highland Park High School, many of the students know someone whose life is afflicted with one of these incurable diseases. CCFA’s mission is to cure Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis and to improve the quality of life of those affected by these diseases.

For the first time in the 5 year history of the 24 hour run, the Boy’s and Girls Track Teams are combining their efforts to raise as much money as possible for CCFA. The 24 Hour Run is a 24-hour relay race in which members of the track team take turns running 1 mile at a time.  The event takes place on HPHS’s indoor track for 24 hours starting on January 29th at 5 pm and concluding on January 30th.  After only 4 years, the 24 Hour Run has raised in excess of $77,000; and in this our 5th year the goal is to raise over $25,0000, bringing our 5 year fundraising amount to well over $100,000. Our goal is to cover over 200 miles during the 24 hours of the relay.

We ask that you become an honorary member of the HPHS Track Team by making a contribution to this cause.  Any amount that you contribute will help.    Donations can be made on a per-mile basis or simply a dollar contribution.  Checks can be made payable to; Highland Park High School.  The Highland Park High School Boys and Girls Track Teams, Highland Park High School, and most importantly those affected by one of these diseases are infinitely grateful for your generosity.
Also, for any alumni that are interested in coming to run in the relay, please come by on Jan. 29th or 30th.   You can also contact the organizers by emailing them at the address below.

Below is a message from one of the guys (along with Evan Reinstein, Class of 2007) that started this event: "Hey everyone just was wondering what time the 24 hour run starts and ends this year. There is a good chance I will be in town next weekend, so if I am I really want to stop by...maybe even run a mile if alumni are allowed too. That being said it really means a lot to me as well as the many other alums that you guys are keeping the 24-hour run tradition alive. HPHS Track and Field/XC is a very unique and special organization. It is a program with a great coaching staff, a program that offers young adults with the tools to improve themselves as athletes, and a program that has class. You guys are really part of a team that is special, a team that will be missed as you move on in life. So take advantage of the oppurtunities that you have now, oppurtunities that may not exist once you leave highschool. So I wish you guys the best of luck next weekend. Remember that the 24-hour run is not simply a way to earn recognition around school, but a way to work together as a track and field team to better society. I hope that I can stop by next week, Thanks for keeping the tradition alive, Zack Weinberg (2006 HPHS Grad)"
