Smoliak Breaks Indoor School Record, While The Hurdlers Shine In First Two Meets

Sunday, March 1 2015

The first two meets of the track & field season are always a way for getting the kinks out after weeks and weeks of training. It also helps us find out what our early season strengths and weaknesses are while the new team members learn how to compete in a track & field meet.

The first meet at GBN saw Eddie Smoliak break the school record in the Pole Vault. Smoliak cleared 14'8” to set the new record and have a great start to his senior year. He has put in a tremendous amount of work since placing 5th at the IHSA State Meet last year. Our hurdlers were another bright spot of the meet. In the 55 High Hurdles, junior Ryan Kriozere ran 7.8 (just .3 off the school record) and sophomore Zev Motew ran 8.2 (just .4 off the sophomore record). The 50 Meter Dash had junior Mark Gilling running a solid 6.3 followed by senior Rock Cerant with a 6.4.

At our first home meet the hurdlers shined again. In the 50 Meter High Hurdles Kriozere ran 7.0 (just .2 off the school record) while Motew was 7.4. In the 50 Meter Low Hurdles Kriozere ran 6.8 (missing the school record by .2) and Motew ran 7.1 (.2 away from the sophomore record).

The team knows it has a lot of work to do to reach its goals. Each meet we are making strides towards those goals. Each member of the team must stay focused, work hard, take care of the details, and do his part to contribute to the team's success.
