Deerfield Wins Duel

Wednesday, March 18 2015 - Highland Park vs Deerfield

After winning last year's duel meet vs. Deerfield on both levels, the Giants knew that Deerfield would be hungry to get the District 113 trophy back.

Teams want to get off to a strong start by doing well in the field events. It was Deerfield that dominated the field event scoring. On frosh-soph DF outscored HP 29 to 16 and on varsity DF once again scored the most points 33 to 12. The only field event winners for the Giants were senior Eddie Smoliak in the Pole Vault on varsity and sophomores Nick Kirsch in the Triple Jump and Jared Levine in the Pole Vault on the frosh-soph level. This is obviously an area that needs major improvement this season. Not only that, but the team needs more athletes on the team in the future that can score in these events.

The track events started well for Highland Park as they won the 4X800 Meter Relay on both levels. After that event, the varsity team was only able to pick up one more first place as senior Deven Greenleaf won the 400 Meter Dash. The team had several 2nd and 3rd place finishes, but that is not nearly enough to compete against a good team in a duel meet. The frosh-soph team was able to win several other events after the 4X800 to keep the meet close, but could not pull off the win. The frosh-soph also won the 800 Meter Run (sophomore Ben Bloom), 4X100 Meter Relay, 400 Meter Run (sophomore Victor Camacho), and the 4X400 Meter Relay.

The team must regroup and show more heart and competitive fire this Friday at the conference meet.
