IHSA 3A Regional Champions!

Monday, October 26 2015 - IHSA 3A Boys Cross Country Regionals

The HP Boys Cross Country Team has been showing improvement as a team the last few weeks and that continued at the IHSA 3A Lake Forest Regional.  The team was once again led by senior Brett Davidson.  He had a solid race in a battle with two very strong runners.   Davidson was with the leaders until Warren's Dustin Macuiba started to pull away with just over a quarter mile to go.   Stevenson's Jared Borowsky just got by Davidson (3rd, 15:02.1) down the final stretch. At the start, the Giant's pack did not get out as well as they usually do.   Freshmen Jose started to move into position by the mile.   The rest of the pack was led by sophomore Fitz Laurie with sophomores Nate Amster and Alec Glazier close behind and then juniors Jonathan Rosenfeld and Charlie Skurie just following them. Taking control of the pack was a courageous move by Laurie as he recently came off of being injured for a long period of time.   He saw that the team was not where they needed to be so he took control to help the team.   After the mile Reyes started to pull away from the rest of the pack and finished in 8th place running 15:36.4 for 3 miles.  This was another impressive performance by this focused and hard working freshmen.  The next four finishers for the Giants raced together in a tight pack.   They finished within 10 seconds of each other in 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th.   Their order of finish was Skurie (15:52.4), Rosenfeld (15:53.7), Amster (15:59.8), and Glazier (16:02.0).   After Laurie's early charge he faded back to 27th in 16:20.4.   His commitment to help the team early in the race may have cost him some time in the end, but he showed how truly unselfishness of a teammate he is.   This great team effort earned HP the IHSA 3A Championship!  Highland Park had 56 points as Stevenson had 70 and Warren finished with 75.   Next up for the team is the IHSA 3A Schaumburg Sectional!   It will be a tough battle as the team attempts to earn a qualifying spot to the State Meet!

The Regional also had an "Open Race".   Junior Matthew Casey won the race with an outstanding effort.  He closed wit ha strong last mile to finish in 16:14.0.   Next in for the team was junior Juan Estela who ran very well to finish in 16:38.0.   Another notable performance was by freshmen Matthew Dennison as he ran his best time for 3 miles (20:03.0).
