Freshmen Win CSL North While Varsity Struggles

Sunday, October 16 2011 - CSL Invite

This year’s freshmen have been working hard this season and were able to put together their best team race when it counted most.   The team packed together well throughout the race and had strong finishes to help push them past Deerfield by one point to win the CSL North Freshmen Team Championship.  The team was led by CSL North Individual Champion Ben Casey who, despite a slow start, ran 11:24.36 for the 2 mile course.  Zach Goldberg (12:12.38) and Evan Lissoos ran outstanding races to place 7th and 8th in the North Division.  AJ Huey and a big breakout race finishing in 11th place running 12:24.92.  Another solid race was turned in by Justin Gunzel in 16th place running  12:43.55.  Andrew Huddleston played a key role by placing one position in front of Deerfield’s 5th runner to help ensure a Highland Park victory.   Huddleston finished in 12:47.21 for 18th place.   Rounding out the top 7 was Jake Dougherty who has struggled with a foot injury the past several weeks.   He stepped up to help his team and finished in 13:04.69 for 23rd place.   Way to go and great racing by ALL of the freshmen!

The varsity unfourtunatly did not fair so well.   Despite a solid start, they had a rough time through the later stages of the race.   The team did manage to have two All-Conference runners.  Jonah Hanig, despite a very strong first 2 miles, faded to 4th place in the CSL North Division.  Ian Jacobs had his best race of the season finishing in 10th place for the North Division.   Congratulations to these two hard working runners!   Let’s hope the team can bounce back with a stronger performance at Regionals.
