Highland Park Finishes Second By 3 Points To Libertyville At IHSA Regional

Saturday, October 22 2011 - IHSA Regionals - Cross Country

The Highland Park Varsity Cross Country Team bounced back in a big way from a disappointing race at the CSL Championships one week ago.   The Giants ran a great team race and were just 3 points away from winning an IHSA Regional Championship.   They finished in second 55 to 52 behind host school Libertyville.   The team had some big question marks coming into this race due to injuries, but they were answered in a big way.

Junior Jonah Hanig ran a very strong race to lead the team and finish in second place just 6 seconds behind the winner in a time of 15:45.02.  Highland Park’s next two finishers were two athletes that ran incredibly gutsy races.   Junior Emmett Smith has been off running for some time before testing out his injured foot this week.   After sitting out the CSL Meet, Emmett surprised most people with his 8th place finish in 16:20.6.    Senior Ari Feldman has had a nagging foot injury all season and has started having some knee issues as well.   He really struggled at the CSL Meet and had to alter his training this week, but was able to step up for the team and run a strong race.   He finished in 13th place running 16:29.72.  Sophomore Angel Estrada (15th 16:34.91) and senior Ian Jacobs (17th 16:36.59) helped complete the strong pack.  The team knows they need to run even better from top to bottom if they are going to make it to State out of the very tough Schaumburg Sectional.    They have worked hard and are focused on the goal they have had all season…Qualify For State!   Good luck next week.   Give it everything you have!

Good work boys. Excellent race by Jonah and huge props to the second through fifth place team finishers on that 16 second gap. All it takes is 5 guys. Good luck at Sectionals!
