Deerfield Out Duels HP

Wednesday, March 13 2013 - Deerfield Duel

The Giants came into this year's Deerfield vs. Highland Park Duel Meet with the hopes of winning at both levels.   Unfortunately, HP was greatly outperformed in the field events and did not have enough to make up for it on the track.   As Deerfield's Coach Kauffman said about his team, "the boys competed with intensity, passion and guts".   Highland Park had some strong performances, but it was not enough to beat Deerfield.

As stated above the field events put Highland Park in a big hole leading to the track events.   The only field event winner for HP was junior Shealtial Isreal in the Varsity High Jump as he once again cleared 6'0".  As the track events begin, the 4X800 sets the tone and our varsity did not set a good one.   By the end of the lead-off leg the Giants were well behind and were not able to come back.   The frosh-soph were able to open up strong and build their lead throughout the race for a big victory.   From that point on, Highland Park could not make up the deficit despite a few highlights.

Other Frosh-Soph 1st place finishes:

Sophomore Zack Goldberg - 800 Meter Run (2:15.0)

4X160 Meter Relay - 1:23.4

Freshmen Max Zavell - 400 Meter Dash (:59.4)

Sophomore Andrew Huddleston -1600 Meter Run (4:55.7) - leading a 1-5 HP sweep

4X400 Meter Relay - 4:05.6

Other Varsity 1st place finishes:

Junior Benjy Rogin - 50 Meter High Hurdles (7.1) and 50 Meter Low Hurdles (6.8) - both make HP Indoor Top 10 Lists

Senior Andrew Sledd - 50 Meter Dash (5.8) -ties school record- and 200 Meter Dash (23.7) -makes HP Indoor Top 10 List

Senior Jonah Hanig - 800 Meter Dash (2:07.0) - his 2nd place 4:31.3 in the 1600 Meter Run makes HP Indoor Top 10 List

4X400 Meter Relay - 3:50.3

More could be written about the many Highland Park athletes that performed well and competed tough.   In the end, it was Deerfield that as a team executed better and seemed to want it more.   The hope from the coaching staff is that the Giants will respond with better focus, intensity, and heart in their preparation as well as in competition.
